Love Dolls / Modern Japan

Post by simon's ghost »

I just saw a pretty intense documentary on the abstract nature of human desire and relationships, on virtual sex and so on. I had no idea that love dolls were such a common thing in Japan.

A guy who collected them talked about how he takes out his doll to take pictures of her in all kinds of environments. He just enjoyed dressing her up differently depending on the location and the landscape and take pictures because his doll is "cute". Then another one told in detail how he used his dolls and their specific reactions, going into detail about how he'd dream of having a doll who's chest actually flattens a bit when lying on her back... They also showed these pornography magazines featuring only dolls. But all the while I couln't help but to ask myself why the same thing didn't seem to exist for women...

The thinkers commenting on it all had some pretty intersting interpretations on the whole concept of this isolated man's society and the projection of feelings onto objects.

UNfortunately, I couldn't catch the title, but it was produced by the (Canadian) Documentary Channel.
Oh well.

Women take care of children, men take care of women. A woman who's 'strong' enough to feel that she should be the one taking care of her man would most likely not settle for a doll. Well, that's my guess. And it's not based on personal preference, but on what I've seen on TV. Particularly sitcoms where if the wife makes more money than her husband he might take offense and feel that she's the one wearing the pants. Tired old jokes ensue. ;)
