DVD ripping question

I've been using Plex as my media server at home and it's great to stream stuff on my LAN to my laptop and my TV, but it's all been pretty generic digital content. I'm looking now to convert my DVDs to put on there.
I have an older version of WinX DVD Ripper Platinum that I got on a free giveaway one time and then there is Handbrake.
Plex doesn't do the .iso format so I guess I'm going to rip individual files.
Anyone here had good luck with one format or another and what tool to use?
