Interesting, I find the comment of cautious optimism to actually be a good thing - they sound aware of the DANGER button that pertains to movies with female leads and how objectifyingly impossible it is to escape "necessary" clichés.

First drafts don't really mean that much. They are basically just saying this is the direction we're thinking of going. I just hope they don't mess up the character personas. They characters are so well established that it would be a shame to mess with them.

their best bet is to create a story for the characters to go through, but otherwise take a back seat to developing them in any way...because as you said, everyone is already so well developed (even the shady bar-tender who leaks information for Motoko - I feel like I even know his story!)
