A few questions

Post by runerangor »

1. What was Gouda's motive? I am confused because in the last episode he attempted to defect to the AE, and he talked about japan being socialist. I don't see how this sudden change connects with his previous schemes.

2. Why did the major leave section 9 in the beginning of SSS, was it because she went to search for Kuze?

3. Did Kuze succeed in uploading himself or not? First part that was confusing was the apple bite. Another part is connected to question 2, if the major really were searching for Kuze why couldn't she find him.

4. (related to SSS) Before the puppeteer dies he told the major that his plan was already in motion, but in the next scene we learn that he dies. What was his plan? Did he fail or succeed in achieving that plan?

Complex enough that I think there will be more than one set of answers (and perhaps more than one set of correct answers)

1a
I think that Gouda's initial motive was to force an exodus to a group mind. I think one of this methods was to start a war between the cyberized and the non-cyberized (which the regular humans would lose).

1b
A global group mind would have no need for national boundaries - I think that is where the Socialism aspect comes in - that is a facet of national identity that would simply evaporate in the absence of anything to which to compare it.

1c
His attempt to flee the country was to prevent his being locked up or shot. He failed.

2
I think this is part of the departure of GitS from the manga and movies. Kuze's attempt to upload stands in for the missing Puppeteer. Motoko though in all 3 versions is exploring identity and so we might be able to assume some of the motivations she expressed in the manga and movies to be present in the series too. Gotta love parallel but divergent story lines.

3a
No idea

3b
One image amongst many ripped off from religion.

3c
No idea (Maybe he didn't make it? Or perhaps like after that mind-meld with Aoi and having her remote shell shot out from under her she finally came back to reality from floating in the net. She also returned from the cyber hub that was showing the movie.)

4a
I think the "puppeteer" that you reference here is actually a splinter of Motoko's own consciousness. It succeeded in the plan to get a physical link to the Major so that it could jump to the next shell in storage. Do you recall the scene earlier on where the major switches shells? Just before the observes that she can still only control 2 at a time? I think one part of her sub conscious has taken permanent leave of the original shell.
Might be a handy cure for multiple personality disorder, treat it as a homeless problem and give each one a new home.

Anyway, that is my 2 ¥€$ worth on the question.

Edit: I had a "w" in there, what a terrible place for a typo... Supposed to be a "2"

I'll take a stab at question 3 for the apple section.

At first, I too, thought it was some garden of eden fruit connection. However, that didn't make much sense to me. A friend of mine told me his interpretation of the apple bite shared between Kuze and the Major, and I really liked it.

His take was that robots do not need to eat real food. Human's need real food to survive. The Major and Kuze were merely joining together to say, "we are not soulless robots, we too, are human," to some extent. I forgot what his exact words were. I apologize.

I can still see some other interpretations of it, whether it be forbidden fruit into the next phase of the world or Kuze as a messiah like figure.

Either way, it's hard to know how far to interpret something but still fun.
Hope this helps.

A comment - you would think that if Gouda's motive was to create a virtual group mind, then why would he have allowed himself to be shot and killed in his shell (presumably....I mean he may have already been within the net and could still go on, much like Kuze, but it still seems like his fate came to an abrupt end)

Also, the major may have not been able to find Kuze himself because his conscience may have merged with all the refugees in some way making himself, well, not himself anymore, but rather a new entity all together...or you could take that the net is vast and she just didnt find him YET

A question I have - for now- the puppeteer, could that be interpreted as almost an upcoming "virus" - a collection on thoughts, emotions, etc that becomes sentient from the net and searches for a shell?? This would be the opposite direction of what normally happens (ie people are born, cyberized, sometimes losing their physical body for a shell, then able to connect to the net) - I parallel it to the Matrix movies where Agent Smith in the Matrix is able to aquire the body of that one guy(name escapes me)...This would just be a more random and potentially dangerous threat...assuming this is how the puppeteer came to be of course...

I think the Puppeteer was a program devised to manipulate information on the net that then became sentient.

I *think* it escaped from Section 4? (or 2?)

Or maybe Kuze just died? :(
