Texhnolyze is not very much like Ghost in the Shell, but it's a very good anime in its own right. Its not very easy to get in, though. It took some time for me to get used to its unusual style and storytelling.

If you wish deep, introspective anime, though, Texhnolyze will offer you exactly that. I could also recommend other works of Ueda and ABe - mainly Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei.
Neon Genesis Evangelion always gets mentioned when more complex anime is requested and while I think, that in some ways it's overspeculated and some fans give it too much credit, it's still a great show, if you don't have too many expectations, beforehand. That happened to me when I saw the first Ghost in the Shell movie and felt dissapointed, because I had expected something else, entirely, but watched without expectations it is a wonderful film.

Well, Grave of the Fireflies has deeper meanings. But it's not alike at all really, so...

Boogiepop Phantom was the anime where I had to think the most. Even Crispin Freeman's comentary didn't clear everything up for me.

I have yet to come across another anime that has GitS's art style, sophisticated plots, and unique take on modern devices. I guess you could say its a one of a kind.

Wolf's Reign, most of the Miazaki stuff, Cowboy Bebop too if you pay attention to the stories about life choices, unexcapable situations, and loss.

However all of these are very diferent in tone from GitS.

May I ask how Miyazaki's works resemble GitS in anyway. The only thing they have in common is their both anime >_<

Serial Experiment Lain is probably the weirdest series I ever watched, but it's quite good. However, I wouldn't really compare it to GitS, but rather to Evangelion (for the reflexion about ourselves). NGE is probably the "deepest" series (and not only among japanese animation) I've ever watched.

Actually, I'd say there's a link between GitS and Serial Experiment Lain, which is the Matrix. It's common knowledge that the Wachoski brothers were inspired by GitS for their first movie, but I'm sure they really "used" some of Serial Experiment Lain parts for their last movie.

See, even though GitS and Lain don't seem too similar at first sight, I personally was able to find a lot of similarities.

Evangelion was an excellent series. :? If only the finale movie wasn't so.....bizarrely messed up.

Motoko2030, actually go to Youtube.com, and search for Ergo Proxy. They have a lot of trailers, AMVs, and the subtitled episodes. Not the greatest, but oh well. :? And aside from it,I think it's just my incompetent searching, but I couldn't find any DVDs of it in the US.
