Section 9

Post by GhostLine »

In the GitS universe, S9 is streamlined to deal with cyberbrain hacking and intel gathering. How effective would they be if they had no real cyber advantage that they might come across today since no criminal today has cyberbrain implants? How successful would they be in non-net scenario, such as the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas that proved to be a complete failure of the ATF and FBI? Of course, this is an American example, since I am unfamiliar with other standoffs in the world.

Is Section Nine at all privvy to forensic science? You don't see Motoko in the courtroom much, but I suppose all one needs to do is upload your memory cache on a particular case to evidence. Think about the data security necessary for electronic-media evidence...physical/DNA evidence would almost be unnecessary...unless data hacking/tampering was a real concern. ok, i'm rambling now....

I'm pretty sure the FBI WANTED to "fail" and kill everyone...seeing as they shot large a propane tank with a tank...

They realy wouldn't be able to do much, mainly because of the lack of manpower.

i guess, the real advatage they they could employ was their camo-gear and their kick-arse-arsenal. to answer me own question. the AI's on the tachi and their maneuverablity would be much more effective than the rambling tanks.

Wouldnt they use another section for more, uh mundane things?

Arnt most, like 99% or something, of people cyberized now though?

To go along with all the stuff you mentioned, the very fact they are Cyborgs, well the major and Batou helps alot, because of their extreme power, etc.

Also in the one episode, with the old woman they thought was her daughter, or granddaughter, I forget sorry, about a group that was against cyberization?

Remember how they were coming up some scafoding and Batou and I thinkk Saito made some coment about how it was like shooting fish in a barrel, and how they had no cyberization so they would die, instead of getting braincase transfers...

And to tell you the truth, there is only one police organization that realy gets the job done. Well, gets the job done very impresively. That organization is Spetznaz. One word: hardcore. Think Sec 9, but better, and no reliance on technology that might not even work in reality. 'Caus they are REAL. >.>''

Anyway...

Spetznaz is like the delta force or special forces in the Russian military.

The Knights Templar in the cyberpunk game, Deus Ex: Invisible War hated anyone with cybernetic implants.

actually Spetsnaz just means 'special forces' and can refer to any of a number of russian special forces, both military and civil. But anyway comparisons between special forces (real or fictional ;) ) is kinda' irrelevent because they mostly operate in very different situations. SAS are the world's best at what they do, but if they were to undertake an operation involving underwater demolitions, they wouldn't perform as well as the US navy SEALs would. It's like comparing Russias black berets with Taiwan's Nighthawks Force (Counter-decapitation unit, very cool ;) ).

The whole point of special forces units like section 9 is that they are delegated obscure niches that are better served by a small specifically trained cadre than by a larger more genericly trained force. The alternative to 'special force' units is a larger 'elite force' like the Royal Marines who implement tactics otherwise only used by SF groups, but are structured so these niches are filled by single millitary specialists. A special force is more effective in most situations to which it should be applied, but only when properly deployed and thus avoiding cockups like sending section9 to a non-net standoff in which they would undoubtably get whupped - A special forces unit in the wrong theatre of operations will almost invariably fail.

...IMO anyway :)

...which answers my question. And that is the point of Kusanagi's "overspecialize" speech to Tosuga, I'm certain.

Well, seeing that the majority of things that section 9 does is usually illegal there probably isn't a force that could really come close. Because Section 9 is so "unique", I'm somewhat glad we don't have anything close to it.
