Granted, but I still think that in terms of GITS it is not necessarily a problem. Doubtless, the presence of Eastern sensibilities throughout both the films and series is undeniable, but then there is also a wealth of Western influence. Look at the entirety of the first season of SAC, which took a s...

"Depending on their target audience there is one core story element that they may have to change." "Western thought assumes that humans all have those and that non humans do not." I got the impression that interest in an adaptation of GITS would necessarily incorporate the philos...

Haraway

I was just wondering, as an extension of my previous post in another thread, whether anyone has any thoughts on the inclusion of Haraway (and her real life counterpart, of course) as a character in Innocence. The work she has done does seem to resonate quite significantly in a thematic sense with th...

The point I see as even more interesting is that I've always seen the part of the Puppetmaster as the result of logic. Having a life form born from memes is the logical follow up to them being replicants as the genes. But, being a life form and not an AI born out of information (evolution by replic...

I'm still here...not that I've been here for that long!

TBH I lurk quite frequently as I suspect most people do, but it's a welcome diversion from uni work etc.

Maybe I should actually try posting some time...

I think it was during an interview with Oshii on disc two of Innocence that he expressed his frustration with the inability of the English dubbing cast to express effectively the tone of the film, and so perhaps the anger in Togusa's voice in the dub was somehow unintentional. That whole scene with ...

I'm not so sure that, in the context of the film, ghost-dubbing causes a person to become 'less human' or 'machine-like', because the overall tone of the series seems to me more about redefining definitions of what it is to be human in an age when technology has advanced to the point that it can gen...

I'm currently reading The Planetarium at the moment for a European literature module at uni, which has also involved various Sartre as well as The Outsider by Camus. Apart from that, various Austen/Bronte works for another module and some Arthurian legends for good measure. Anyone else studying Engl...

I'm not sure Spielberg would turn the film into a two hour battle scene, but obviously a big budget production needs some kind of mass appeal that perhaps the original didn't have.

It's hard to imagine what anyone could bring to the film apart from a different visual perspective.

In a sense all the discussion related to the look of the film makes me think that this project is less centered around advancing the concept of the film than adapting it for a slightly different audience. While I don't doubt that the film will be impressive visually (judging from Production IG's tra...
