Chat! Chat! Chat! (Official IRC Channel - Details)

Post by Saito »

I don't know about anyone else, but I fell that this group of people are among one of the finest communities that I know. I am frustrated though. I post here regularly, and respond whenever I can with what I hope is semi-valuable ramblings from a broken mind.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a live chat channel on an IRC server. Obviously the ultimate decision lies with Jeff, but I'd be happy to setup, administrate and moderate it wherever possible. I'd consider it my duty.

What do you folks think?

EDIT: By Popular demand, I've been asked to post the up-to-date server details and Rules/Disclaimer here for easy access:

server: irc.oceanius.com
channel: #intheshell

DISCLAIMER:
Please understand this channel is not affiliated with the forums, or the 'in the shell' website in any way, and nothing said during discussions there, and/or no actions taken as a direct or indirect result of discussions, arguments or nuclear flame wars in the channel will have any comeback on Jeff or this website and/or forums.

RULES:
Updated 27/04/2008 09:43am BST

Moderator's decisions are final.

No bots or scripts are to join the channel.

No blatantly and harmfully insulting other channel members.

Play Nice

Keep it Clean(ish)

No Insults

No Defaming Remarks

No Discrimination

No Flame Wars

We don't dig 1337sp33k.

Use proper grammar. No "u" instead of "you" or "ur" instead "your". Also learn the proper differences and meanings of "there", "their", and "they're". These three are not interchangeable, and should be used properly. (I'm deadly serious).

Overuse of "lol" gets very annoying fast, so stop and think "Is this really funny?" before typing those three letters.

No being gross or overuse of obscenity, you'll get a warning for first offenses, and kicks for more use. If it gets out of hand you'll be banned and we'll send a letter to your parents.

Although the topic for In The Shell is Ghost in the Shell and it's related matter, this is a social channel and the topic is open for any reasonable discussions, or social chit chat. Moderators reserve the right to stop any conversation channel members or Moderators find distasteful, or violates any of the above rules.

I am currently not handing out Op to anyone else, apart from Jeff and Sylphi (who automatically qualify as forum Moderators). This decision may be altered depending on individuals showing a mature and sensible attitude.

What is said in IRC stays in IRC unless all persons involved agree that you are allowed to quote it elsewhere. Be aware that persons in IRC may also reveal things about themselves that they don't necessarily want to reflect back on the forums. Keep your head on and don't go shooting your mouth off.

Have Fun.

I don't think it would help as far as GITS or Anime in General topics. But it would allow us to get to know each other a little bit on a personal level so it sounds good to me. The biggist problem I see with it is there are very few of us on-line at the same time....Then again maybe a chatroom would help slove that :D

I know that when I'm in chatrooms I have a very hard time staying on topic. My mind does tend to go off in some strange directions on occasion

Sounds great to me
something along the lines of freenode.net #ghostintheshell

[pipedream]
It would also be great if we could set up some kind of 3D thing similar to the one in ghost in the shell

maybe we should make a universe in Interverse and use that.

Well by way of a trial to see if people are willing to use it, I have made an unofficial channel on one of my regular IRC servers. IF you guys want to try it out it's at:

server: irc.zirc.org
channel: #intheshell

If you are unfamiliar with IRC chat clients and are a bit bamboozled then you can try using: http://www.mibbit.com
which is a web-browser based chat client.
(requires a recent browser and a half-decent computer, works with Mac OS X and Windows XP/Vista and probably Linux)

Okai, for people using chat, I'm gonna fill in a few details.

For Mibbit, here's a bit of a tutorial, incase you are still a little bamboozled.

1. open http://www.mibbit.com
You'll (eventually) get a big green page up with this in the middle-left:
Image

2. Select 'Other Server...' from the bottom of the drop down list, then type in irc.zirc.org in the empty box that appears, then in the 'Join channels' box type in #intheshell .
It'll look like this:
Image

3. Fill in your own Nickname, not mine :P

4. Click Connect

3. You will get a couple of new tabs in the tab bar:

Image

The 'irc.zirc.org' tab shos you any messages from the irc server. You generally don't need to pay much attention to these.
The '#intheshell' tab is the channel tab, this is where you chat!

4. The main white area with the lines acrtoss is where the chat is diplayed, and the text box at the bottom is where you type your chat messages:

Image

5. On the right is the list of users. You can click a user name and get some options drop down below it. This is handy if you want to PM someone in the channel (which opens a private conversation in separate tab).

Image

Commands let you do stuff extra in IRC. For those new to IRC, here's a few commands you may find useful:

/me
lets you perform an 'action' For example '/me dances' will display '*Saito dances'

/msg <person> <message>
another way to start a private chat, it basically sends an 'off-air' message that no-one else can see, this is also used to communicate with nickname and channel services, such as....

/msg nickserv register <your password> <your e-mail>
lets you register your Nickname with the server so no-one else can steal it later. You will need to provide a valid e-mail address and be able to get the e-mail, as the server will send you an authorization command which you will need to copy and paste into the IRC channel to coplete the registration. A registered nick will result in the server removing the nick from anyone who can't provide the correct password after a period of time, or the registered owner logging in and identifying. Once registered you can use...

/msg nickserv identify <your password>
this identifies you with the server and locks your Nick so no-one else can use it or steal it while you are on the server.

/msg nickserv ghost <your nick> <your passowrd>
in the event that someone else is using your nick, and you have registered it, this will grab it back and kick them off.

/whois
allows you to get the info for the user. There's nothing alarmingly personal in the info, but do be aware that some IRC clients allow you to put your real name in, so be sure to remove this if you are not happy to broadcast it.

Finally, please remember this is a PUBLIC channel. Anyone can join and anyone can see what's going on. Most of the time this isn't a problem, but if you must say something personal, sensitive or wish to lodge a complaint etc. with a moderator, then use a /msg and keep it off-air.

I'm sure we'll all get on fine. :D

P.S. AI won the notional Mars bar for the first person to join ;)

Oh, and for the record, if I'm in the channel it means I'm around the place somewhere. drop me a /msg or mention 'Saito' if I don't respond right away, it makes my computer squeek at me :)

Also updated the rules slightly.

Sounds good to me, except part of my web hosting contract states that I cannot set up any kind of IRC interface using their servers--so if you want to host it yourself, feel free. (Since Saito has gone ahead and set it up, if he wants to keep running it, his is the "official" In the Shell IRC. :) )

Saito, the rules you've listed look good to me.

Once I've dusted off mIRC (or downloaded the latest version) I'll check in.

Cheers,
Jeff

Perhaps we need to make this thread a bit more prominent ... should I move it to a position around the Posting main topic and make the chat room a main topic itself?

(Also making it more prominent by posting in it:) )

Sticky-ing it somewhere prominent should be sufficient.

I don't think I could have a more appropriate name for the thread but I'll add a description in brackets :)

UPDATE: Now, put that up somewhere where everyone can see it :)

Sweet, now if we can only have a decent way to set up chat-times, or even have more people to go chat, and we'd be set.

I'm on even right now.

If people want to log on at convenient times, weekend evenings from 8-12 UK time are when I'm most often around. If I've got IRC open i'll be in the channel, although you may have to prod me for a response as I might be playing EVE. If I'm there and you don't get a response within a decent time scale I've probably wandered off. I do that.

I have been advised that after a merger of the network the IRC channel is on and another network, we should change the server we connect to for IRC to:

irc.chatech.net

All other details remain as previously stated.

Channel seems quite dead

I don't mind idling during European daytime, but it will get quite lonely if no one shows up once in a while.

pointing out the obvious is easy, but I havent seen anyone reply with how we are going to get more active members on this forum...

1st- and prob weak- suggestion....cruise through the adult-swim forums and see if there are any GitS fans floating around over there...

2nd...just start posting...talk about anything...people may come back to the site and not posting simply because they see no activity and feel their thoughts will go unheard.

Simply put: Be the change you want to see in the world...

+10 for anyone who knows who said that
