Obsession

Post by base of the pillar »

I have a question to all the anime fans out there. (everyone on this board)

Like most of you I'm sure GITS while being my favorite is not the only anime I watch. One of the other anime/mangas I enjoy is Naruto. Well the other day I decided to browse Deviantart for Naruto images. There were over 76'000 images, but a mojaority of them seemed to be Yaoi, sorry if misspelled, images. For those of you who don't know those are images that feature two of the main character, male, in a homosexual relationship. While I have no problem with homosexuality most of these characters are drawn as blatently heterosexual. (One of the early jokes was the male main character, Naruto, and his obsession with one of the main female characters, Sakura. I was just wondering why there are so many fans out there obssesed with making these characters homosexual. (Oh and before you think it a good portion of these drawings seem to have been done by female artists.)

Yaoi, being mostly drawn by females, always confused me. I can understand hentia, being as its drawn by perverted males. But woman really aren't the type to imaging their favorite characters in sexual situations.

Guess girl anime fans are a bit freaky (lol, jk, no offense).

Your topic title had me thinking "Obsession... for men". And what do you know, it would've fit! :D

Why artists would take perfectly heterosexual characters and turn them homosexual is obviously because they want to draw the characters they know and love, but in homosexual situations. Why homosexual situations? Well, one likely reason seems to be that they want to see the characters they know and love having sex, but not with another member of the artist's (and/or viewer's) own sex, since sexual images of members of their own sex don't turn them on. Maybe such images even turn them off. Well, this all seems reasonable to me, but I'm really just guessing. I'm pretty sure this is why a lot of guys think lesbian porn is hot though.

Or they could be doing it just for the sake of equal rights to produce pornography. I'm not sure such a fabricated motive would get so many women doing it, but I don't really know women. That women would be less interested in sexual fantasies is probably a myth/misperception though. But they might be less likely to show an interest in pornography as long as it's viewed as socially unacceptable. Of course, on the net most people are pretty anonymous, so there they can show each other what they really want!

At a school assembly I remember the persentage that woman that look, or have looked at porn is like 65%.

I think that was it. I just remember it was pretty high and surprised me.

I think its just suprising because men are more likely to be open about it, because its less of a taboo in society. For a normal teenage boy to look at pornography is no big deal, because, "hey, its just a normal boy thing to do." I think its still sort of a social faux pa for women, or teenage girls to be caught talking about or even admitting to watching pornography or masturbating.

I think it's really higher. Not everyone answers honestly in polls, even though they remain anonymous. Ah, the silly cultural conditioning...

Most of the images weren't pornography. They just depicted them holding hands or kissing. So I don't see how the whole sexual situation idea you came up with would apply. Very good idea though.

The girls I've had the misfortune to meet that do like yaoi are often kind of odd (I say misfortion because they have all been girls that I haven't much liked, not due to the fact that they like yaoi). The ones I've met have all been the female equivalent to very obnoxious fanboys.

As to why they like yaoi, I can't be sure. My best guess would be the same as Gillsing's, these girls would rather not see members of their own sex in romantic situations. Maybe we should ask one of our female peers.

Would any of the female peers out there like to try to explain.

er sticks head into topic...

I think yaoi is just something that fans do because they can. It compares to hentai doujinsi with straight characters to me. You're still putting your characters in sittuations they would never be in and making them have sex... so er I'm not sure what's so wrong about it.

I dont' think it has anything to do with not seeing women in sexual situations. I think it has more to do with the fun of seeing not one but two of your favorite characters getting it on. It also involves to some extent the feminization of one male character which may be a turn on for some women.

Boy's Love is often used in anime to draw in female fans in Japan too, so I don't even think of this as a "cultural" thing either.

The very first slash fiction was written some time in the 1960s or 70s by some female writer - can't remember the name - and it told about forbidden love of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.
In anime, yaoi is directed to female Japanese audience, who appreciate sexy males without disturbing female presence. It's quite popular, I've heard - clearly more popular than yuri. At least in it's country of origin, it's usually disliked by real gay men, though I'd imagine, that they make at least some of those doujins.

I enjoy a lot of the yaoi that's out there, actually.
Partly what Jeni said about seeing one's favorite characters getting intimate, or appreciating pretty male bodies. But also partly because of the subversion factor.
Sort of like the artists pick up on the homoerotic element in the male bonding that goes on in popular fiction, and amplify it to the nth degree...

But some directors put it there to draw in female fans. It's only natural that something like that would happen. For instance I just watched a director interview with Mahiro Maeda who added certain hints to Gankutsuou to draw in female fans.

I was thinking more of the ones who don't, but the fans feel compelled to create fics/doushinji that do more than just hint...
