i like the idea of the opening shot motoko in just the thermoptics googles but how about with her standing a small distance from the child shell she is in at the end of the movie. have them facing back to back but with a distance of 1 - 2 inches to show the difference in character but all as one sculture/statue to sybolise change.

How about her in the child shell in that chair with the IV and stuff...when she first wakes up after getting blasted by Section 6?
Either that or Motoko and the dog in front of the Locus Solus clock with the aemaeth cards....
