Does GITS compare to Akira?
I've heard from numerous critics and audiences that it is compared to Akira? how so? is it cause both are smart, rewarding and unique anime movies that set big high standards?
I think something that each has in common is the scope of the story telling.
Neither is telling some small story about one family (for instance My Neighbor Totero) but is instead a story that (re)defines the whole world. Without using such a broad stroke that the details fall out.
I had the same feeling after watching Akira as I did when I first saw 2001. I think GitS is like that too.

People tend to look at you a little strangely when they know you stuff voodoo dolls full of Ex-Lax.
