Animation company Production I.G has received permission from Kodansha to act as an agent to develop a live-action film with a Hollywood studio based on Ghost in the Shell.
Got this from http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... -the-shell

This is great news, Production IG always does a perfect job when it comes to Ghost in the Shell and I have always wanted to see what a Ghost in the Shell film would look like as a live action movie.

That's HUGE news!!!

However, I don't know if it's a good one or a bad one.

If it's properly done (I really hope that Production IG, and especially Masamune Shirow, will have a right to control the quality of the movie) with a good scenario, it could be a huge blockbuster (in a good way) :P .

But it's poorly done (I especially fear an as-dumb-as-matrix story and crappy actors), I would be sooooooooooo disgusted :x

You do have to realize, that since we are the fans of the series, there isn't really any chance for us to be truly satisfied. Content is the highest pleasing we can achieve through something like a live-action GitS film.

i have tremendous fears about this.
i can't really see how one can improve upon the depth of Mamoru Oshii's work. I hope they find someone who is reverent of the source material and doen't cut any corners...and get Ridley Scott on the committee...Blade Runner is a good template.

I agree with that ghostline.....It would be a crime for it to end up being a Sci-Fi Network made for TV deal. Ridley Scott would be outstanding. He did a great job a alien as well. Plus have Speilberg produce the film has some deep pockets.

My biggest fear is seeing
"Starring Nicole Kidman as the Major"

I think when you look at the Hollywood seems to think we all need to be talked down to. It would be a disaster. There is so much going on in GITS that would get glossed over. I think thats why I like Anime. Some of it actually makes you think about life and society in general and about the future in particular.

Anime for adults or live action for children.

It would either be a kiddy film or softcore porn

Anime and live action are kind of similar though. By which I mean, there is a small proportionof intelligent stuff in each and an equally large sea of fluff in both. It falls to preference.

I pray that it goes nowhere. I also hope that the Tachikomas will say a prayer to Zero requesting the same thing.

Now that I'm thinking about it, a 3D movie could mean that it would be based on MMI, don't you think? That would actually suit almost better than in an anime...
