I can't remember the programme makers ever giving an explaination of why it's called a 'gig', but it could be either a reference to a 'gigabyte' or the slang word 'gig' which just means a job(normally a job playing music, but it's meaning has expanded to describe any job).

I think we were going after this interpretation - it does have a meaning: " Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG" => " Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd Job"backlit0001 wrote:okay now i got it with the music
i cant believe that there is no meaning in the "GIG"
They spelled it with ALL CAPS which is irregular, so maybe they are taking advantage of the ambiguity between the word meaning "job" (like gig economy) and gigabyte. There is also the US country term gig for a type of hunting of amphibians. A gig in this sense is both the act of hunting and the tool used for it.
Also this is the English name of it, what was the original Japanese name?
Oh they use English for it...
